How to plan a business website before design begins

Scroll Down

A useful website brief explains what the site must help people do. You do not need every screen worked out, but you do need enough clarity to make sensible design and development decisions.

Choose the main job

List the actions that matter: requesting an estimate, buying a product, finding a service or signing into a portal. Rank them. A homepage trying to give every action equal weight makes the next step harder to see.

Write for the questions customers ask

Collect the questions your sales and support teams hear repeatedly. Use them to plan service pages, product information and useful guidance. Assign an owner to each page so content approval does not become a launch surprise.

Inventory the existing site

Record valuable URLs, downloads, forms and connected systems before a redesign. Decide what to keep, improve or retire. Where a page moves, plan a relevant permanent redirect rather than sending every old link to the homepage.

Agree on practical acceptance checks

Specify important devices, keyboard journeys, form behaviour and content editing tasks. Include the people responsible for domains, hosting and integrations in the handover plan.

Prepare a brief your team can maintain

Bring together the audience, page list, assets, required integrations, budget constraints and preferred timing. Leave room to discuss the platform; choose it based on the work the website needs to support.
